ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION
AVID is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in high school and college. The program places special emphasis on growing WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading), critical thinking, and teamwork skills.
The AVID student is a student who is classified as being in the academic middle (The B / C grade student), but shows potential to be much more than average. Usually, the AVID student is first generation, (the first in their family to go to college), and historically under represented in higher education.
What can AVID do:
- Teaches skills and behaviors for long-term academic success
- Provides intensive support with tutorials
- Helps to develop strong student/peer/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
- Provide students with the opportunities to visit college campuses and witness first-hand the lives of college going students.
